1893-S Morgan Dollar, AU50
King of the Circulation Strikes
1893-S $1 AU50 NGC. Two dollar issues are rightly called the
King of the Morgans. For proofs, the 1895 holds that title, and for
circulation strikes, the 1893-S is the title holder. Some students
of the series suggest that the actual mintage of 1893-S Morgan
dollars was smaller than the reported 100,000 coins. In any event,
it is more challenging than the 1894 business issue, which has a
similar mintage. Scattered marks on each side of this slightly
reflective example are expected at this grade level. The surfaces
are medium silver-gray with hints of peripheral wheat-gold toning.
Overall, an attractive AU example worthy of the advanced Morgan
