Description

1818 B-8 Quarter, MS61
Lightly Toned Capped Bust Type Coin

1818 25C B-8, R.3, MS61 NGC. Tompkins Die State 1/1, unclashed and struck from perfect dies. A "triple dentil" below the first 1 in the date and a short die line from the inside point of star 2 identify the obverse, while the rare extra claw (hallux) near the lowest berry is unique to the reverse. Satiny luster resides beneath light golden-gray toning on this pleasing Mint State 1818 Capped Bust quarter. The strike is even and bold, and the reverse is rotated about 45 degrees counterclockwise. Light surface chatter limits the grade but there are no severe abrasions. Likely among the top dozen B-8 examples known, ideal for type and variety representation.
