Description
1859 Seven-Piece Proof Set
NGC-Certified PR64 to PR66+ Cameo
Ex: Simpson
1859 Seven-Piece Proof Set, PR64 to PR66+ Cameo NGC. Ex:
Simpson. The set is well-matched and original. It reportedly
surfaced about the year 2000 in a family estate where it had
resided since 1859. Housed in consecutively numbered NGC holders
with the shared Simpson pedigree. Includes:Cent PR66+ Cameo. Often in early proof sets we handle, the cent is one of the lower-grade coins, but in this set it is the finest in terms of numeric grade, and it is the only piece awarded a Cameo designation. It is a sharp, stunning piece with ample field mirroring and rich copper-orange, gold, and lilac hues. A loupe reveals a few faint pepper specks, none bothersome.
Three Cent Silver PR66. Glassy fields complement boldly struck devices, while the faintest of clash marks are seen on each side -- typical of the denomination. Lovely sea-green, lavender, and pale champagne hues adorn each side.
Half Dime PR66. CAC. Delightfully original with subtly mottled olive and amber-gold toning beneath a dusky gray overlay. The coin is sharply struck and thoroughly mirrored with comparably strong technical preservation, as CAC endorsement affirms.
Dime PR66. F-101, R.4. A sharp strike spans the central devices and encompasses the bold, broad rims and dentils as well. Mirrored fields adorn lovely amber-gold and champagne hues with light gray overtones that attest to the originality of the piece. The reverse shows a few black fibers adhering to the coin around the right wreath branch via a tiny amount of residue.
Quarter PR64. CAC. Briggs 1-A. Despite being the lowest graded coin in the set this near-Gem quarter is one of the most attractive, and its technical quality is high-end for the grade. Sharp, glistening motifs complement mirrored fields bathed in gold, amber-tan, and blue-green toning that gravitates mostly toward the margins, leaving the interiors an ivory hue. A threadlike strike-through arches up from the dentils left of the date.
Half Dollar PR65. The half dollar and silver dollar in this set have similar toning patterns and colors. The half shows blue-green and lavender in a wide crescent through the left half of the obverse, with the right quadrant champagne-brilliant. On the reverse, the toning is mostly in the margins, leaving the interior silvery. Some of the reverse, below the eagle and on its left (facing) wing, shows black fibers adhered to the coin via tiny amounts of residue.
Silver Dollar PR65. OC-P1, R.3. The toning on the silver dollar obverse encompasses much of the periphery, leaving the silvery center that reaches to the lower right rim. The reverse yields vibrant blue, lavender, and orange-gold hues in a pattern reminiscent of a nebula. The coin lacks nothing for sharpness and yields deep field mirroring.
