Description

Republic gold Proof "Central American Independence - 150th Anniversary" 1000 Colones 1970-BCCR PR67 Ultra Cameo NGC, Italcambio mint, KM199, Fr-23. Coin #535 (on edge). The largest and most impressive of a set of Costa Rican silver and gold commemorative issues dated 1970 produced by the Italcambio mint in Caracas, Venezuela. This particular issue celebrates Central America's proclamation of Independence from Spain, though technically the Province of Guatemala initiated this legal maneuver. The obverse design features a "sunface" perched above mountains, an iconic design motif displayed on many early issues from the region post independence.

In 1821, Central America declared independence from Spain, ending centuries of colonial rule. The provinces of Guatemala, El Salvador, Honduras, Nicaragua, and Costa Rica briefly united as the Federal Republic of Central America, but internal conflicts soon led each to become separate nations.
