When Diocletian came into power, he realized that the empire was too large to be run by one person. To solve this problem, he divided the Roman Empire into four parts to be ruled by four men, the Tetrachy, with himself and Maximian as Augusti and Galerius and Constantius I as Caesares. The art of this short-lived period emphasized the equality of these emperors and stripped away their individuality. Unfortunately, after Diocletian's death, the tetrarchy quickly fell apart with infighting for control, resulting in Constantine the Great, the son of Constantius I, coming out on top.
