Description
George IV gold 2 Pounds 1823 MS64 PCGS, KM690, S-3798, Fr-375. A greatly desired one-year type that is also notable for being the inaugural issuance of the 2 Pound denomination. Assistant Engraver Jean Baptiste Merlen took up the task of crafting George IV's effigy based on Chanterey's bust, after the headstrong Chief Engraver Pistrucci declined to work from a "non-life" model. The certified population of this type thins dramatically beyond the Choice Mint State tier, grades of MS64 and greater consist of less than 10% of the total problem-free population at PCGS. The present near-Gem offering is particularly attractive for the grade, the obverse displaying significant semi-Prooflike contrast and the reverse exhibiting much of the same qualities. Quite a scarce selection at this premium state of preservation.Metal: Gold
Diameter: 26.5mm
Weight: 15.9761g
