1921-S Half Dollar, MS62
Ultimate High-Grade Key

1921-S 50C MS62 NGC. From a mintage of 548,000 coins, the 1921-S is the ultimate high-grade key date in this widely collected series. Perhaps lower-mintage issues like the 1916-S, 1921, and 1921-D were set aside in greater numbers by speculators. Regardless, probably only a few hundred 1921-S half dollars survive across all Mint State grade levels. As a whole, the date's average certified grade falls between F15 and VF20.

Both sides are bright and practically devoid of toning, save for hints of dusky gold and crimson on the obverse. The 1921-S tends to come softly struck over the highest points, and this MS62 is typical in that regard. Luster is moderately subdued, though the reverse is noticeably more vibrant. A cornerstone example for any serious collection.
