Description

1921-S Half Dollar, Pleasing MS63
Key San Francisco Issue

1921-S 50C MS63 PCGS. The 1921-S is the most elusive half dollar of this year in high grade. The San Francisco Mint struck 548,000 pieces -- more than twice the number of coins produced by either Philadelphia or Denver, but the higher mintage does not translate into availability in high grade. On the West Coast -- an area supplied almost exclusively by the San Francisco Mint -- half dollars and larger denominations tended to circulate to a greater extent than they did on the eastern seaboard. According to census data, the Mint State survivorship of the 1921-S half dollar is less than half that of the 1921-D, and nearly one third that of the 1921. At public auction, this issue appears in Uncirculated condition barely more than half as often as its Denver and Philadelphia counterparts. This collector-grade Select example displays softly frosted luster with minimal abrasions and a hint of light golden toning that is barely perceptible. The usual strike weakness is seen on Liberty's head, the branch hand, and the eagle's trailing leg.(Registry values: N4719)
