1855/54 Arrows Seated Half Dollar, PR65
Ex: Eliasberg, High Condition Census Example

1855/54 50C Arrows PR65 NGC. FS-301, WB-102. Any 1855 half dollar is rare in proof format, with probably about a dozen proofs that still survive with the regular 1855 date and another eight to 12 or so proofs that display the highly sought 1855/54 variety. We can account for eight distinct specimens -- including this former Eliasberg example -- and there is nothing to indicate that many more will surface. The proof 1855/54 obverse die was later used to issue circulation strikes. The 855 of the date all show evidence of underdigits. The crossbar of the 4 is strong on this example. The fields are brightly reflective, and each side displays attractive ice-blue and orange-gold toning interspersed across the Gem proof surfaces. The strike is consistently sharp on both the obverse and the reverse, with delicate mirroring throughout the fields and lightly frosted central motifs. This piece is undoubtedly one of the finest of the top eight 1855/54 proof half dollars. The Phil Kaufman specimen, which has the top spot in the Condition Census, was graded PR65 Cameo by NGC. This Eliasberg coin coin is tied for second with a PR65 example from the Norweb Collection. Both visually and technically, it is an outstanding representative of this rare and important Seated Liberty variety.
