Description
1882 Trade Dollar, PR67 Ultra Cameo
White-on-Black Superb Gem
1882 T$1 PR67 Ultra Cameo NGC. Coxe-1. The 1882 proof Trade
dollar exists among several proof-only issues that close out the
short but popular series. Speculators and opportunistic coin
dealers took note of the low proof-only mintages, driving collector
interest that peaked in 1880 when nearly 2,000 proofs were struck.
By 1882, the mintage had declined to 1,079 pieces, which even today
makes the issue a better value than its higher mintage
predecessors. Only a small percentage of examples are certified as
Deep or Ultra Cameo but there is no question regarding the elite
status of the present coin. Dramatic contrast exists between the
snow-white devices and the brilliant mirrored fields. Although the
1882 proofs vary in sharpness, this Superb Gem is pinpoint sharp
throughout the deeply struck motifs -- including Liberty's head and
branch hand and throughout the eagle's plumage. A single die pair
accomplished the entire 1882 proof mintage. NGC Census: 5 in 67
