1795 13 Leaves Ten Dollar, VF30
BD-2, Ex: Troy Wiseman

1795 $10 13 Leaves, BD-2, High R.4, VF30 PCGS. Ex: The Peh Family Collection. Bass-Dannreuther Die State a/d. The eagles, or ten dollar gold pieces, were the largest gold coins authorized by the Mint Act of April 2, 1792. The denomination was not struck until 1795, with an official mintage of 5,583 pieces. Those coins were divided among five die pairings. BD-2 is a "missing link" variety that pairs the reverse die of BD-1 with the obverse die of BD-3 and BD-5. BD-2 is scarcer than BD-1, and is seldom encountered in collector grades. The present apricot-gold example displays a surprising amount of remaining luster for the VF30 level and is devoid of distracting marks. The reverse field beneath the right (facing) wing has a glossy appearance.
