1799/8 Draped Bust Dollar, AU58
15 Stars Reverse, B-3, BB-141

1799/8 $1 15 Stars Reverse, B-3, BB-141, R.3, AU58 NGC. Ex: Durango Collection. Bowers-Borckardt Die State IV. The 1799 Draped Bust dollar claims the largest mintage of the series, at 423,515 pieces. Based on current availability, it seems likely that some of the coins were actually struck from 1798-dated dies that were still serviceable in 1799. Twenty two die varieties are known for the date, with three varieties struck using a single overdated obverse die from 1798.

The present coin is an attractive near-Mint specimen of the popular BB-141 Guide Book variety, with the overdated obverse and the 15 star reverse. The engraver must have impressed 15 stars on this reverse die in error, and then attempted to cover the first star on the left and last star on the right by enlarging the two nearest clouds to cover up these errant devices. Despite his best efforts, two star points still protrude from the bottoms of these clouds. In addition, the dentils on the lower-right obverse of this coin are strongly doubled, the result of clashing with the reverse die. Only a trace of actual wear shows on the well-detailed design elements, and the lightly abraded, lustrous surfaces show a few hints of pale gold and lavender-gray toning.
