Description

1870-CC Seated Quarter, AU50
Elusive First-Year Issue
Condition Census

1870-CC 25C AU50 PCGS. Briggs 1-A. The Carson City Mint began operations in 1870 after several years of planning and building the facility following Congressional authorization in 1863. Demand for quarter dollars in the regional Nevada economy was minimal in favor of larger silver and gold denominations. Quarter production was limited to just 8.340 coins. In The Confident Carson City Coin Collector, Volume I, Rusty Goe notes that quarters were the last denomination to be struck in 1870, with the first delivery of 3,540 examples occurring on April 20. Another 1,400 quarters were delivered on May 24, and a final group of 3,400 coins was delivered on August 15. Numismatic interest in branch mint coinage was minimal and the existence of a few higher-grade pieces was a matter of chance. Perhaps 70 to 80 examples of the 1870-CC quarter survive in all grades.

This example is the sixth finest known to us. The MS64 NGC Eliasberg coin is the finest known and the only Mint State survivor. Two PCGS AU55 coins, the Kennywood example and the Gardner Collection coin are next in the census. Following those are two AU53 grade coins, one PCGS and the other NGC, and the present AU50 PCGS coin. Two other AU coins recorded in the NGC Census Report are likely duplicate entries of known examples.

While showing the expected wear on the design high points, this rich violet-gray example has splashes of iridescent toning. Minuscule handling marks are expected for the AU50 grade, and none singularly stand out. The surfaces and aesthetics of this example are exactly what any collector might hope for. Population: 1 in 50, 3 finer (3/25).(Registry values: P9)
