Description

1888 Gold Dollar, PR66+ Deep Cameo
Glimmering 19th Century Proof
Endorsed by CAC

1888 G$1 PR66+ Deep Cameo PCGS. CAC. JD-1, High R.4. Glimmering, high-contrast 19th century proof gold coinage is usually out of reach for most collectors, but the 1888 gold dollar presents a more accessible entry point. A total of 1,079 proofs were struck, of which John Dannreuther estimates 150 to 225 pieces survive. Although they were minted from the same dies as the regular-issue coinage, there is absolutely no mistaking the proof origin of this high-end Premium Gem with Deep Cameo contrast, which is both Plus-designated and CAC-approved. Yellow-gold surfaces feature watery, reflective fields around thickly frosted devices. Eye appeal is exquisite. The missing letters in LIBERTY and polished feathers on the headdress are typical. Population: 5 in 66 (3 in 66+) Deep Cameo, 2 finer. CAC: 5 in 66, 0 finer (5/21).(Registry values: P1)
