Description

1856 Seated Dollar, MS63
Condition Rarity in Mint State

1856 $1 OC-1, R.2, MS63 PCGS. Osburn-Cushing Die State b/d. Only a faint trace of an underlying 6 exists beneath the primary 6 in the date. In earlier die states, the overdate is much clearer as confirmed by 2012 research by Dick Osburn and Brian Cushing. The initial 6 punch was entered at a 45° angle, then partially effaced and corrected by the Mint. All 1856 circulation strikes are from the OC-1 die pair. This coin is the usually seen late die state, with heavy die cracks throughout the reverse legends and a rather soft strike visible throughout the central devices and at Liberty's head and the upper obverse stars. Dappled tan and brown obverse toning contrasts with the mostly stone-white reverse that displays a speckling of tan and blue patina. Only 63,600 pieces were struck, making the 1856 scarce in all grades and rare in Select Uncirculated condition or any finer. A few scattered, tiny obverse marks account for the assigned grade. PCGS Population: 7 in 63, 3 finer (4/25).
