Description

1821 B-4 Quarter, Near-Mint
Splendid Multicolor Toning

1821 25C B-4, R.3, AU58 PCGS Secure. Tompkins Die State 2/3. The clashed intermediate die state without cracks through star 12 or the first A in AMERICA. This well-struck example appears Mint State upon cursory inspection, but light wear on the eagle's right claw confirms brief non-numismatic handling. The apple-green, butter-gold, and plum-red surfaces show only trivial contact. Described in its J.H. South auction appearance as "worthy of any collection."
Ex: J.H. South Collection (Stack's, 5/1951), lot 452; Redfjord Collection - Denver Signature (Heritage, 8/2006), lot 1083, which realized $3,450; Denis W. Loring Capped Bust Quarter Collection; to the present consignor.
