Description

1854-D Three Dollar Gold, AU53
Dahlonega Mint Rarity

1854-D $3 AU53 NGC. Variety 1-A. The Dahlonega Mint struck three dollar gold pieces only in 1854, the first year of the denomination. Coinage was limited to just 1,120 pieces, these distributed into Southern commerce. No immediate numismatic interest existed for the issue, and the coins served only a commercial utility purpose. As a result, survivors are scarce in all grades today, and nearly all are circulated. This AU example displays bright yellow-gold color with light wear and smooth surfaces. Hints of satiny luster cling to the protected peripheral fields. Portions of the border dentils are weakly struck, as is characteristic of this issue. Census: 10 in 53, 54 finer (6/23).(Registry values: N7079)
