Description

1795 V-3, LM-4 Half Dime, MS62
Remarkable and Possibly Unique Late Die State
Plated in Valentine and Logan-McCloskey

1795 H10C V-3, LM-4, R.6, MS62 PCGS. This late die state example displays a prominent rim break covering most of stars 11 through 14 with just the inside points of those stars visible. The late authors of the standard half dime reference, Russell Logan and John McCloskey, write that this variety is "difficult to obtain in any grade, and very rare in mint state."

The heavy obverse rim break explains the limited use of this obverse die that did not appear in any other die combination of the 1795 half dimes. The reverse was previously used to coin the LM-3 half dimes.

A review of our Permanent Auction Archives, including nearly 800 appearances of 1795 half dimes, finds just 12 examples of the LM-4 die marriage. Only one other example approaches the late die state of the present piece. The Jules Reiver Collection had an example with a retained cud enveloping stars 11 through 14, prior to that piece of the die breaking off. The Reiver coin grades VF Details, Damaged.

Although somewhat bluntly struck, especially on the reverse, this lovely Mint State example features beautiful old-time toning with splashes of peach-gold, sea-green, and sky-blue. A few scattered surface marks prevent a higher grade.
