Description

1814 Half Dollar, O-105, Peripherally Toned MS65

1814 50C O-105, R.2, MS65 PCGS. This variety is attributed by: three heavy bars from stripes of the shield boldly clashmarked at Liberty's ear, a broad 8 in the date and the second 1 low, the left side of E centered under the D in UNITED, and a pronounced stem to the upper berry. This is an early die state despite extensive clash marks on both sides. Later states, known as the Single Leaf (O-105a), have the reverse die lapped, removing the leaf just above the upper berry which now appears to lack a stem.

Peripheral gold-orange, electric-blue, and purple toning is somewhat deeper and more extensive on the reverse of this Gem. The design elements are sharply struck and pleasing, frosty-silver luster emanates from minimally marked surfaces. High Condition Census for the O-105 variety. Population for the issue (all varieties): 9 in 65, 3 finer (10/15).
