Near-Mint 1793 C-2 Half Cent
1793 1/2 C AU58 NGC. C-2, B-2, R.3. The Mint turned their efforts to coinage of half cents after completion of the Chain and Wreath cents. All of the Chain cents were delivered from the chief coiner to the Mint treasurer from March 1 through March 12, followed by nearly all of the Wreath cents from April 9 to April 28. Additional Wreath cents were delivered on July 6, and a final small production on July 17.After those pieces were coined, the first delivery of half cents followed a couple of days later, with 7,000 pieces delivered on July 20. The next delivery consisted of 24,934 half cents on July 26, and the final group of 3,400 pieces was delivered on September 18, the same date as the entire mintage of 1793 Liberty Cap cents.
This is an amazing example with splendid chocolate-brown color and excellent luster. The surfaces are covered with tiny planchet flakes, concentrated near the edges, and these are often seen on high grade pieces, the result of inadequate striking pressure. Otherwise, the obverse and reverse surfaces are pleasing with considerable luster remaining in the protected areas. Each side has a few unfortunate rim bruises, the only defects on the piece. These can be seen at 3 o'clock and 8:30 on the obverse and about 7 o'clock to 7:30 on the reverse.
Long irregular streaks in the obverse fields are the result of a late die state, and developed in the latest states of C-1, the earlier use of the obverse die. Unlike most examples of C-2, the strike is nicely centered on a wide planchet. EAC 35.
