Description

Aragon. Juan II gold Escudo ND (1453-1464) MS62 NGC, Zaragoza mint, Fr-29a (under Catalonia), Cay-1797 var. (reverse legend), MEC VI-238 var. (different obverse). 3.49gm. IOΛNNES: DEI: GRΛCIΛ: CΛR (double annulet stops), Juan, crowned, facing, trident in right hand, fish above C over his left shoulder / REX: ΛRΛGONVM: N: S: V (double annulet stops), crowned shield. Struck in Aragon for use in Catalonia. Only the third example of this rare and elusive type we've yet handled, and an representative that admits few flaw even to the scrupulous eye. Beaming with originality and visual character, the legends remain fully legible and central devices well-embossed, even allowing for full appreciation of the cross-hatching to the reverse shield. Rarely located in similar preservation, and sure to interest the discerning collector.
