Description

1868-S Type Two Twenty Dollar, MS62
Among the Finest at PCGS

1868-S $20 MS62 PCGS. CAC. This is a frosty and fully lustrous Mint State example of an important issue that is nearly at the top of the population charts. Single MS63 and MS64 specimens are the only finer coins certified by NGC, and PCGS has never graded an example of this date finer than MS62, although three 62+ pieces are listed. A common scenario among double eagles struck in San Francisco is the combination of a substantial mintage and immediate circulation of nearly every example coined. As testimony to the rarity of this issue in Mint State grades, the best example acquired by Harry Bass was just AU58, and the Louis Eliasberg specimen was only XF45. This coin is far finer than those, with smooth and frosty surfaces showing only a few minuscule grazes and a sharp strike. This one of only two CAC endorsed examples for the grade, with none finer. PCGS Population: 16 in 62 (3 in 62+), 0 finer. CAC: 2 in 62, 0 finer (5/25).(Registry values: N7079)
