1860 Mormon Five, K-6, XF40
Attractive Lion of Judah / Beehive Design

1860 $5 Mormon Five Dollar XF40 PCGS. K-6, R.5. Ex: Allan. All of the various Mormon gold issues were largely discredited as far below par outside of the Mormon community, leading to their melting en masse not long after their creation. Today the Mormons pieces are quite rare and widely sought after. The 1860 five dollar was the last Mormon issue, struck a full decade after the previous five dollar pieces of 1849 and 1850, and using gold from the Colorado Rush. The novel new Lion of Judah/Beehive design along with the cryptic Mormon alphabet on the obverse makes it a favorite of collectors today, with even impaired examples bringing strong premiums when they have good eye appeal.

This example displays wear consistent with the PCGS grade and overall pleasing orange-gold color, the latter of which differs from the bright yellow-gold or olive-gold typically seen. In-hand, the surfaces reveal myriad small-to-moderate abrasions, especially in the fields on both sides, and a loupe discovers some faint swirling line marks in the upper right obverse quadrant. Housed in a 30th anniversary green label holder.
