Massive Presentation 25 Toman

Nasir al-Din Shah gold Medallic 25 Toman AH 1307 (1890) AU55 NGC, Tehran mint, KMX-M10, Fr-Unlisted. Struck to commemorate the Shah's return from his third tour of Europe, this very rare piece exhibits some light handling in line with the certified grade, characterized primarily by tiny contact marks in the fields. Some striking weakness in the centers is also noted. Nasir al-Din was the first modern Iranian Shah to conduct state visits in Europe. This piece commemorates his final trip, whereafter the Shah attempted to modernize Iran by introducing many of the technologies which he had witnessed throughout Europe. However, many of his reforms were unpopular, particularly his decision to sell the rights of all Persian tobacco production to a British Army officer around the time this coin was struck, and ultimately led to his assassination in 1896.
Ex. Buddy Ebsen Collection (Superior, 9 June 1987), lot 6003; Superior (March 30 1971), lot 2444.
