Description

1846-D/D Quarter Eagle, AU53
Early Die State Example

1846-D/D $2 1/2 AU53 PCGS. Winter 7-L. Struck from a relatively early die state, this AU53 1846-D/D quarter eagle shows bold remnants of a misplaced mintmark over the 1 in the fraction. Die cracks connect the D of UNITED and STATES to the eagle's left (facing) wing, and continue along the bottom letters of STATES OF to the right (facing) wing. A later die crack through the E in AMERICA to the wing has not yet formed on this coin. The obverse and reverse fields exhibit strong originality, with a sharp strike on both sides. Light circulation is noted, although most of the satiny luster remains. Attractive green-gold patina shows accents of vibrant lilac and orange, delivering overall delightful eye appeal. AU-level examples are highly sought after, as PCGS reports just 12 pieces in Mint State (9/25).(Registry values: P2)
