Description
1849 Seated Dollar, PR65
Tied for Second Finest of Nine Located
Ex: Frederick Geiss and Floyd T. Starr
1849 $1 PR65 PCGS. OC-P1, R.7. Osburn-Cushing Die State a/a,
as always. Brilliant champagne illuminates a backdrop of
russet-gold and charcoal-gray on the obverse. On the reverse,
sky-blue is magnified by similar golden champagne areas around the
eagle, giving the appearance of a sunrise. Slight weakness is
present on the high points of the eagle's feathers, as well as on
some star centers. However, no significant marks exist, consistent
with the Gem grade. Two proof die marriages exist for this year. Both use the same obverse, but interestingly, the OC-P2 uses a new reverse. This makes it the first proof Seated dollar since 1840 to not use Reverse 1840 PA. This die marriage was discovered by John Dannreuther and remains unique.
While OC-P2 is unique, OC-P1 is not much more common, adding only eight coins to the surviving population, for a total of nine. This makes 1849 the third rarest date of Seated dollar proofs, after 1841 (six known) and 1842 and 1843 (eight known each). Moreover, the present offering is the third finest example we have located.
