Description

1892-S Silver Dollar, AU58
Noted Conditional Rarity

1892-S $1 AU58 CACG. Within the Morgan dollar series, only the 1893-S is rarer in Mint State than the 1892-S. The present coin approaches Uncirculated status, but the eagle's chest has a hint of wear. Nonetheless, cartwheel luster abounds. Blue-green and russet toning accompanies the borders. Minor marks are distributed, but none distract. The 1892-S mintage was 1.2 million, low by Morgan dollar standards but well above the 1894 and 1899 Philadelphia issues, for example. The rarity of the 1892-S in Mint State is likely because the issue was needed in Western commerce, which favored coin over paper money. It was a different story in the East, where the silver dollar was seen as cumbersome.(Registry values: P8, N1793)
