Description

1851 Humbert Fifty Dollar, VF30
K-6, 887 Thous., Reeded Edge

1851 $50 RE Humbert Fifty Dollar, Reeded Edge, 887 Thous. VF30 PCGS Secure. K-6, R.4. The U.S. Assay Office, operating under the Curtis, Perry & Ward contract, produced a large number of octagonal fifty dollar gold ingots to serve the local economy during the Gold Rush era. Many of these hefty "slugs," as they were called, were later deposited as bullion at the San Francisco Mint after 1854, to be recoined into regular federal eagles and double eagles, making them scarce today.

This impressive VF30 example represents the K-6 reeded edge variety, with the date under the eagle and the reverse ribbon close to the border. The design elements show moderate wear and the orange-gold surfaces exhibit the expected number of nicks and abrasions for a large gold coin that spent some time in circulation. Some minor rim dings are evident on both sides. A still-pleasing example of this intriguing Gold Rush relic. Listed on page 397 of the 2019 Guide Book.
