Description
Commodore Perry Medal, SP62
Rare Silver Example, Julian PE-26
(1856) Commodore M.C. Perry Medal SP62 PCGS. Julian PE-26.
Silver, 63 mm. Dies by Francis N. Mitchell. Commodore Perry's naval
brigade obligated Japan to begin trade with the West. In gratitude,
Boston merchants commissioned the present medal. Bronze examples
sell at auction with some frequency, but silver examples are rare,
from a mintage of 20 pieces. Our auction archives show only one
prior appearance in silver, lot 38271 in our May 2011 Americana
Signature. This sharply struck specimen has light magenta toning,
with powder-blue accompanying design recesses. Marks are minimal
across the mattelike surfaces.
