Description

1871 Eagle, AU55
Only 1,790 Circulation Strikes Produced

1871 $10 AU55 PCGS. CAC. Ex: Simpson-Hall. The 1871 is another low mintage issue (as are all Philadelphia eagles from 1869 through 1873) with a tiny number of 1,790 pieces struck for circulation. There are around 55 to 65 examples known and most are in the XF45 to AU53 grade range. An AU55 is rare (the PCGS population of six seems accurate) with only three graded finer: two in AU58 and a single coin in MS61. The finest known is from the Admiral Collection and it brought $45,600 in February 2018.

This piece is notable for displaying far fewer detracting abrasions than normal for the issue and its color and luster are well above average as well. CAC has approved just three pieces in total for this date, two in AU55 and one in AU58.

There have been four auction records for 1871 eagles in PCGS AU55 since October 1999. The most recent is from the Regency Auction XXIV (Legend, 12/2017), lot 101, which brought $8,813. Heritage has not sold a PCGS AU55 since January 2011.
