Description

1855 Three Dollar Gold, MS65
Condition Census Rarity

1855 $3 MS65 PCGS. Although not considered one of the big three type coin issues (that honor goes to the 1854, 1874, and 1878), the 1855 three dollar gold piece is still a relatively available early date from the Philadelphia Mint. Most Mint State examples grade in the MS61 to MS63 range, while Choice coins are scarce, and Gem or better pieces are exceptionally rare. We have previously handled only one MS65 coin, which appeared on two occasions in our auctions, in 2016 and 2017, respectively. We have not handled a finer piece since 2009.

This lovely Gem displays frosty, pristine wheat-gold mint luster that shimmers when rotated beneath a light. A thin hairline graze on Liberty's cheek limits the grade, but the coin is otherwise beautifully preserved. The wreath bowknot is slightly incomplete, but the strike is otherwise bold. Population: 6 in 65 (1 in 65+), 1 finer (3/25).(Registry values: N7079)
