Description
1860-S Three Dollar Gold, MS61
A Rarity in Mint State
1860-S $3 MS61 PCGS. The 1860-S was the last three dollar
gold piece struck at the San Francisco Mint before the famous
1870-S coin. Only 7,000 1860-S pieces were produced, and most went
into circulation. Only a handful have survived in Uncirculated
grades. This is a Condition Census MS61 coin, showing smooth,
luminous orange-gold mint luster that shimmers when rotated
in-hand. Slight strike softness appears on the wreath bowknot as
usual, but elsewhere the strike is sharply brought up. No singular
abrasions disrupt the visual appeal, and only some light hairlines
on each side prohibit a finer grade from PCGS. We have previously
seen a Mint State 1860-S three dollar on only seven occasions. The
most recent offering was the MS64 PCGS CAC Bass Core Collection
coin (Heritage, 9/2022), which realized $360,000. We last handled
an MS61 piece more than a decade ago. Population: 4 in 61, 3 finer
(3/25).(Registry values: N4719)Selections From The Storck Family Collection.
