Description

1842-D Five Dollar, VF20
Scarce Large Date Variety

1842-D $5 Large Date VF20 PCGS. Winter 8-G. Well-preserved green-gold fields are lightly accented with splashes of lavender and peach on this decidedly original half eagle. The Dahlonega Mint struck 59,608 pieces in 1842, with the Large Date variety estimated at about 36% of that total. A low survival rate has left the variety conditionally scarce, as PCGS has attributed just 82 Large Date pieces and estimates that there are less than 100 known (10/25). This VF20 five dollar example presents remarkably well with grade-consistent wear and scattered light abrasions, exhibiting the well-struck letters and central motifs largely intact and thinly bordered in hues of plum and marmalade.(Registry values: P5)
