Description

1909 Quarter Eagle, PR63
The So-Called 'Bright' Finish

1909 $2 1/2 PR63 PCGS. After the negative reception by collectors of the matte finish gold proofs in 1908, the Mint decided to strike non-sandblasted proofs in 1909 and 1910. The result was coins that were yellow-gold, and to many eyes indiscernible from a sharply struck business strike. In 1909 there were 139 proof quarter eagles struck with perhaps half that number extant today. The PR63 grade is explained by light hairlining on each side; however, the hairlining has not noticeably altered the color of the coin. It is still yellow-gold with just a tinge of reddish patina. Otherwise, there are no contact marks we can see on either side. Population: 24 in 63, 24 finer (8/16).(Registry values: N4719)

Coin Index Numbers: (NGC ID# 289H, PCGS# 7958, Greysheet# 8620)

Weight: 4.18 grams
