Description

1844-D Five Dollar, VF30
Elusive Dahlonega Type Coin

1844-D $5 VF30 NGC. Winter 11-G. The Dahlonega Mint struck 88,892 half eagles in 1844 and is generally available in circulated grades. However, the issue is conditionally rare in Mint State, as NGC reports a total of just 18 Uncirculated examples (10/25). Well-struck with typical softness on central devices, this VF30 half eagle displays authentic olive-gold patina with charcoal highlights on the device borders and recesses. Circulation rub has blended the high points but all of the lettering in LIBERTY and throughout the legends shows clear and legible. The peak of the 1 is repunched and identifies this variety. Scattered abrasions are consistent with the grade, and remarkably only one faint diagonal mark over Liberty's nose is noteworthy.(Registry values: P2)
