Description
1838-D Half Eagle, AU50
HM-1, Scarce First Year Issue
1838-D $5 HM-1, R.3, AU50 NGC. Early Die State before
polishing of the obverse and reverse dies, with full hair and eagle
detail. This is the first year of half eagle mintage for the
Dahlonega branch mint, which are highly sought after by Classic
Head gold collectors and type collectors, as the following year was
the first issue of the new Liberty Head design for half eagles.
Daryl Haynor describes the 1838-D strike, "Overall both the obverse
and reverse are well struck. The details of Miss Liberty,
especially the hair, are well defined." That description matches
the overall strike of this example, with some weakness in the
obverse stars. The eagle and shield display excellent
definition. This specimen has attractive olive-gold toning. Circulation marks are commensurate with the Extremely Fine grade, with slightly more contact marks in the reverse fields. Luster is within the stars and reverse lettering. This is a nice example of the scarce first year Dahlonega branch mint half eagle, and the last year of the Classic Head half eagles.
