Description

1841-D Small D Half Eagle, MS63
Conditionally Rare Branch Mint Gold

1841-D $5 Small D MS63 PCGS. Winter 5-D. The 1841-D is a relatively early Dahlonega issue with a mintage of less than 30,000 pieces. Four die marriages with two mintmark sizes are known, but a majority of survivors are Winter 5-D, identified by a circular break at the top of the second vertical shield stripe. The date is lightly repunched south. The 1841-D is very scarce regardless of grade, but most examples are in XF to AU grades. A majority of the few Mint State pieces grade MS60 to MS62, but the present coin grades MS63, due to a surprisingly unabraded obverse and only minor contact on the reverse field. The strike is bold for the remote Southern facility, and both sides display hints of lime-green toning across predominantly caramel-gold surfaces. Population: 3 in 63, 3 finer (3/25).(Registry values: P3)
