Description
1862 Half Eagle, MS60
Low-Mintage Civil War Issue
1862 $5 MS60 NGC. The 1861 half eagle mintage was the
second-highest ever for the denomination up to that point, but by
the second year of the Civil War, gold coins were hoarded and
increasingly replaced in commerce with unbacked paper money.
Mintages of gold at Philadelphia plunged. The 1862 five dollar
business production amounted to just 4,430 pieces, and few were set
aside. PCGS estimates that fewer than 100 examples have survived in
all grades, and only a handful remain in Mint State, including the
present lot. It displays substantial sun-gold luster and exhibits
an intricate strike. Both sides show a smattering of small marks,
all of which are unworthy of further description. Census: 1 in 60,
1 finer (3/25).(Registry values: P7)Coin Index Numbers: (NGC ID# 25VP, PCGS# 8292, Greysheet# 8908)
