Description

1893-CC Double Eagle, MS62
A Great Rarity Any Finer

1893-CC $20 MS62 NGC. Variety 2-A. The 1893-CC double eagle comes from a mintage 18,402 pieces. Although this issue is more plentiful than its mintage would suggest, it is scarcer than certified population figures indicate. Pieces graded MS62 are scarce, and higher-grade representatives are decidedly rare. NGC lists 21 finer coins and PCGS 24 (9/18), but we have only handled two of the finer coins in recent years. In the Central States Signature (Heritage, 4/2018), lot 4436, an MS63 PCGS coin garnered $40,800. Previously, in the ANA Signature (Heritage, 8/2014), lot 5739, a CAC-approved coin in the same grade realized $52,875.

It has been more than a year since we offered an MS62 example of this final-year Carson City issue. This piece displays sharp motifs and radiant cartwheel luster with rich orange-gold coloration. Grade-limiting abrasions are light and scattered, none posing significant distraction.(Registry values: N2998)
