Description

1911-S/S Five Dollar, MS63
FS-501, Extraordinary Eye Appeal

1911-S/S $5 FS-501 MS63 PCGS. Autumn-gold surfaces release flashy hues of orange through radiant, satiny luster that produces a spectacular cartwheel effect on this 1911-S half eagle. San Francisco produced slightly more than 1.4 million pieces in 1911, but many were released into circulation (typical for Western coinage), and others fell victim to melting in the 1930s. Only 39 examples are finer than this coin at PCGS, a remarkable statistic given the hefty mintage (9/25). Overall the strike is strong, with just faint softness on the device high points. Marks are light and limited, appearing less evident due to the exceptional luster and color that deliver such strong eye appeal. FS-501 shows a secondary mintmark just south of the primary S. This is the finer of just two FS-501 examples attributed by PCGS (10/25), although many coins remain unattributed.
