Edward III (1327-1377) gold Noble ND (1363-1369) MS62 PCGS, Tower mint, Cross Potent mm, Treaty Period, S-1502, cf. N-1231 (symbol before ЄDWΛRD not discernable), Schneider-75 var. (symbol before ЄDWΛRD not discernable, very different obverse die). 7.71gm. ЄD | WΛRD: DЄI: GRΛ: RЄX: ΛnGL: DnS: hyB: ? (retrograde): ΛQ | T (double saltire stops), crowned, armored figure of Edward standing facing in ship, sword in right hand, shield in left / +IhC: ΛVTЄm: TRΛnSIЄnS: PЄR: mЄDIV: ILLORVm: IBΛT (double saltire stops), Є within quatrefoil at center of large floriate cross, crowned lions in angles, all within polylobe with trefoils in spandrels. A relatively unusual die style for Edward's Regular Treaty Period Nobles, with his smaller, compact head showing clear parallels to the prior, Transitional Treaty series. Indeed, abundant die rust is present throughout the obverse surfaces in clear contact to those of the reverse, perhaps suggesting reuse of an older obverse die. Still very laudable on the whole, and a piece which presses the upper bounds of its assigned certification.
