1831 Quarter, B-2, MS64
First-Year Type Coin
1831 25C Small Letters, B-2, R.2, MS64 NGC. Tompkins Die
State 1/3. The Capped Bust quarter design was slightly modified in
1831, reworked for a planchet 2.7 mm smaller in diameter. The motto
E PLURIBUS UNUM and its ribbon were also removed from the reverse.
This piece is boldly struck with satin luster. Much of each side is
light golden in color, although the right obverse margin has
violet, gold, and gunmetal-blue toning. There are no major
abrasions, although some light slide marks are visible with a
