Description

1812 Large 8 Half Dollar, MS66
Woodin, Clapp, and Eliasberg's O-105a
High Condition Census

1812 50C Large 8, O-105a, R.2, MS66 NGC. Ex: Eliasberg. Gentle pearl-gray and tan hues adorn this lustrous and formidably pedigreed Overton-105a half dollar. Multiple sets of clash marks and a network of faint obverse die cracks confirm the relatively late state for the die marriage. A tiny obverse spot at 8 o'clock matches the plate in the third Eliasberg auction, which traces this coin's pedigree through the Clapp family to William H. Woodin. A couple of light vertical marks on Liberty's neck are only apparent when viewed beneath a strong loupe. The devices are well-struck. The Eliasberg coin is high in the Condition Census for the O-105a variety.
Ex: William H. Woodin; John H. Clapp; Clapp Estate to Louis E. Eliasberg, Sr. (1942); Louis E. Eliasberg, Sr. Collection (Bowers and Merena, 4/1997), lot 1721; Long Beach Signature (Heritage, 6/2006), lot 1613, which realized $11,500; Summer FUN Signature (Heritage, 7/2018), lot 3074, where it brought $13,200.
