1908-D Motto Double Eagle, MS66+
Exceptional Preservation, Few are Finer

1908-D $20 Motto MS66+ PCGS. Long Rays Obverse. 1908-D double eagles were produced in three types: Short Rays No Motto, Long Rays No Motto, and Long Rays With Motto. All three types were struck in similar quantities. Research by Roger Burdette indicates the Long Rays With Motto type had a 342,640-piece production. U.S. Mint Engraver Charles Barber attempted to improve the Saint-Gaudens double eagle appearance by extending the obverse rays, believing the change would also extend die life. All 1908-D With Motto twenties have the Long Rays obverse, as do subsequent years in the Saint-Gaudens series. This high-end Premium Gem example is frosty and sharply struck. Both Liberty's branch and and torch hand show bold finger definition. The D mintmark is doubled. Both the obverse and the reverse of this lustrous, medium-gold coin are essentially mark-free. Finer examples are nearly uncollectible. Population: 3 in 66+, 4 finer (3/25).(Registry values: N4719)
