Description

1908-S Double Eagle, MS62
Low-Mintage Inaugural S-Mint Saint

1908-S $20 MS62 PCGS. The 1908-S Saint-Gaudens double eagle is a well-known and celebrated rarity in the series, one known chiefly for its low mintage of only 22,000 coins -- by far the lowest mintage of all the regular-issue With Motto twenties. The 1908-S was formerly considered even more elusive than it is today -- and it still is, with many collectors quite proud to own an example in any grade -- but, as is the story with many mintmarked issues in particular, more are available now than formerly due to repatriations from overseas hoards. The present MS62 specimen is boldly struck, highly lustrous, and offers surprisingly good eye appeal, but a sprinkling of scattered, trivial marks keeps it from an even finer grade. The surfaces are largely orange-gold, although a few lilac accents increase the appeal. Population: 88 in 62 (2 in 62+), 93 finer (3/25).(Registry values: N4719)
