1596 Betts-17 Dutch Jeton, AU53
Displays Arms of Zeeland
1596 Jeton American Commerce, Bronze, Betts-17, AU53 PCGS.
Chocolate-brown surfaces contain steel-brown regions in the
protected areas. Microscopic porosity requires significant
inspection to detect. This bronze Dutch jeton displays the Arms of
the Dutch province of Zeeland on the reverse, and Betts links both
this piece and the similar Betts-16 with early commercial voyages
to St. Thomas and Brazil. He did not, however, list the copper
version of this jeton, noting only silver strikes.From The Costa Family Collection, Part II.
