Description

1652 Oak Tree Shilling, AU58
Salmon 5-D, IN at Bottom

1652 Oak Tree Shilling, IN at Bottom, Noe-7, W-480, Salmon 5-D, R.5, AU58 PCGS. 73.5 grains. A late die state of this scarce variety, noteworthy for its indistinct low relief tree and a dramatic break between the base of the 2 in the date and the N in AN DOM. The evenly microgranular surfaces are practically unabraded and toned in deep brown and gray hues. The upper half of the tree is wavy, as issued from a rocker press. The reverse has ideal centering. The obverse is missing the tops of letters between 2 and 9 o'clock. Much higher in grade than the typical Salmon 5-D Oak Tree shilling, and possibly unsurpassed in quality among late die state pieces. Listed on page 36 of the 2025 Guide Book.

Coin Index Numbers: (Variety PCGS# 898265, Base PCGS# 45362)
