Immense "Peace with Turkey" Gold Medal

Catherine II gold "Peace with Turkey" Medal 1791 MS61 Prooflike NGC, Diakov-225.1 (R5). 83mm. 241.26gm. By Leberecht and Waechter. A truly awe-inspiring Medal, struck to a 70-Ducat weight in celebration of the peace with Turkey. Rare are the occasions when Medals of this magnitude are made, whose purpose is clearly for presentation in commemoration of a historically important event. To witness such a piece here is simply a treat, with Catherine's bust rendered in extreme realism and detail only an 83 millimeter planchet could afford, a clear departure from the majority of her coinage and other Medals. While plagued by hits and contact marks characteristic of these expansive Medals to preclude a higher conditional assignment, yet ultimately doing nothing to limit the desirability of the piece on offer. In the last few decades, examples of this size and metal have come to market no more than a handful of times, each generating substantial sums. Last offered in 2008, we can only anticipate the excitement that will be generated this time around.

The Russo-Turkish War of 1787-1792 marked an unsuccessful effort by the Ottoman Empire to reclaim the territories it had ceded to Russia following the conflict of 1768-1774. Despite the Ottomans' ambitions, the war turned decisively in favor of Russia and its ally Austria. Key victories at Foc?ani, Rymnik, and the fortress of Izmail by Russian forces, along with the Austrian triumph at Belgrade, solidified their dominance. Facing mounting pressure and the looming threat of Prussian involvement, Russia agreed to peace negotiations. The resulting treaty, signed on July 31, 1791, officially ended hostilities and confirmed Russian control over the Black Sea region.

MS61 Prooflike NGC。
