Massive & Significant Gold Medal

Nicholas I gold "Blagoveschensk Bridge" Medal 1850-Dated MS61 Prooflike NGC, Diakov-594.1 (R5), Smirnov-549. 75mm. 214.98gm. By A. Klepikov and A. Lyalin. Obv. Crowned Imperial eagle soaring right over the Bridge above Neva river; Cyrillic legend in ex.: Begun 1843, Completed 1850, PЂЗAЛЪ KЛEΠИKOBЪ (Engraved by Klepikov) below. Rev. Hercules and Minerva r. crossing a waterfall, before them a woman reclines left leaning on a flowing urn and holding an oar over her shoulder; It Is; COЧ. Γ. Θ. TOЛCTOЙ at left, PЂЗ. A. ЛЯЛИHЪ. (Designed by Count F. Tolstoy, Engraved by A. Lyalin).

The Blagoveschensk (Annunciation) Bridge was the first permanent bridge built across the Neva River in Saint Petersburg, connecting Vasilievsky Island to the central part of the city. Following Nicholas I's death in 1855, the bridge was renamed Nikolaevsky Bridge in the Czar's honor until 1918. The design for this issue was classically inspired, with a great depiction of Hercules being guided by Minerva over water. The reverse engraving is dedicated to bridge itself, a technological feat in its day and still in use. Very few of these pieces in gold have ever come up for auction, and this is the lone certified specimen at either major grading party. Thoroughly rare and intrinsically enchanting in such an immense format composed of gold; yet another important Russian Medal again made available to the public from this stellar collection.

MS61 Prooflike NGC。
由A. Klepikov及A. G. T. TOЛCTOЙ」 ,右方為「PЂЗ. A. ЛЯЛИHЪ.」(意即由Count F. Tolstoy設計,由A.
