Description

1904 Half Eagle, PR66 Cameo
Among the Best-Preserved Survivors

1904 $5 JD-1, R.4, PR66 Cameo NGC. Unabraded, mirrored surfaces contrast with white-gold, well-defined devices. After peaking at a mammoth 230 coins in 1900, mintages of proof half eagles entered a downward trajectory that lasted through the end of the Liberty Head series. The number of Cameo and Deep or Ultra Cameo examples also trended downward from its peak in the second half of the 1890s, with PCGS having awarded the Deep Cameo designation zero times after 1901, and NGC having only given the equivalent Ultra Cameo designation three times over the same period. This makes Cameo examples, such as the present offering, the highest collectible quality for the proofs of this era. Among 1904 Cameo examples, NGC has assigned higher grades four times, where PCGS has done the same only twice (5/25), making the present offering one of the finest extant survivors.
